On December 10, at the seminar on space breeding to help rural revitalization and development held in Wuhan, the person in charge of the National Space Breeding Achievement Transformation Center will carry the Shenzhou 12 spacecraft and travel in space with astronauts for three months. Handed over to Wuhan for ground breeding.

The rapid development of China's manned spaceflight industry is a strong proof of the continuous improvement of China's comprehensive national strength.

In recent years, with the continuous development of China's space industry, space mutation breeding has gradually become an important breeding path. Up to now, aerospace breeding has not only cultivated new varieties of crops such as grain, vegetables, fruits, and rape, but also created new varieties of forest, grass and flowers, new varieties of Chinese herbal medicine, and new strains of microorganisms such as pharmaceuticals and wine making, which have made important contributions to the realization of my country's agricultural modernization.

During the handover of space seeds, Zhang Chuanjun, director of the National Space breeding Achievement Transformation Center, said that this batch of space seeds, including rice, corn, and rape seeds, entered space with the Shenzhou 12 spacecraft on June 17. After a three-month space trip, he returned to Earth on September 17 and conducted preliminary screening at the National Space breeding Achievement Transformation Center. After this batch of space seeds is handed over to the partner Hubei Jinguang Agricultural Science and Technology Co., Ltd., it will be selected on the ground at the scientific research demonstration base of the National Space Breeding Achievement Transformation Center (Wuhan) located in Zhangwan Village, Binhu Street, East Lake High-tech Zone.

A person in charge of the Municipal Bureau of Agriculture and Rural areas said that in recent years, space breeding has provided a new platform, new technology, and new stage for the development of China's breeding industry, which is one of the important technical paths to overcome the problem of sticking neck in the seed industry.

The relevant person in charge of the Seed Industry Management Office of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of Hubei Province said that breeding innovation is the first driving force leading the development of the seed industry. As a force in the field of high-tech breeding, aerospace breeding has shortened the breeding cycle, improved breeding efficiency, and obtained rare germplasm. Resources and many other advantages can provide a lot of practical materials and convenient conditions for the selection and breeding of crop varieties. The transfer of these space seeds and the unveiling of the rural revitalization and space breeding practice base will inject strong impetus into breeding innovation in our province.

■ Through space breeding, seeds with strong stress resistance, high yield and high quality can be selected

Zhang Chuanjun said that under the influence of the space station's high rotation speed of 655 kilometers per minute around the earth, space radiation and weightlessness caused by cosmic rays and solar magnetic storms, the gene arrangement or structure of seeds will mutate, some seeds will produce good traits, and some seeds will change in the direction of poor traits. The focus of ground breeding is to breed seeds with positive mutation traits and cultivate new varieties.

"Space seed is a seed that undergoes mutagenesis under the influence of the special environment in space. Its own genes are recombined or chromosome number is mutated or gene is mutated. No foreign gene is introduced, so it is not a genetically modified seed." Zhang Chuanjun said that the difference between space seeds and ordinary seeds is that space seeds are carried on spacecraft. After special environmental changes such as space weightlessness and hypoxia in a high vacuum and high clean environment, the internal structure has undergone radical changes.

Zhang Chuanjun said that in the natural environment, plant seeds are actually mutating, but the process of variation is extremely slow and the frequency of variation is very low, which is generally called natural variation. The early traditional plant breeding methods were mostly the selection and utilization of this natural variation, which proved to be safe and feasible. Space breeding is a process that people consciously use space environmental conditions to accelerate the variation of organisms, which is called artificial variation. There is no difference in nature between the two variants. Since the mutant gene of the space seed is still the product of the genetic mutation of the original seed itself on the ground, in fact it has not introduced other new genes harmful to humans.

"Seeds returned from space flight (non-direct consumption) have not been found to have any increased radioactivity after rigorous professional testing. Therefore, there will be no adverse reactions to the consumption of food, vegetables, etc. produced by space seeds." Zhang Chuanjun introduced that through aerospace breeding technology, new varieties of rice, corn, wheat and vegetables with strong stress resistance, strong disease resistance, high yield and high quality can be selected and bred.

■ This batch of space seeds will be bred in Wuhan and tested in many places across the country.

What will be the use of this batch of space seeds after they are received? Gao Xuegang, chairman of Hubei Jinguang Agricultural Science and Technology Co., Ltd., said that the space seeds received this year include rice, corn and rape seeds, of which the rice stock comes from the company's own selection of Space Aroma Rice 2, and the rape and corn stock comes from the company's own cultivation in Wuhan with strong genetic stability and other advantages of high-quality seeds. The space seeds received this time will have three uses. First, they will be cultivated in Wuhan, planted in greenhouses, screened for variety characteristics, tested for rice quality, yield and other rounds to screen out new varieties with excellent characteristics. Second, they will be retained as materials for later scientific research or breeding. Third, they will be used for field trial planting in Hainan Experimental Base.

Gao Xuegang introduced that Hubei Jinguang Agricultural Technology Co., Ltd. is the first enterprise engaged in fragrant rice space breeding in China. It has jointly built a scientific research demonstration base of the National Space Breeding Achievement Transformation Center (Wuhan) in Zhangwan Village, Binhu Street, Donghu High-tech Zone with Gaonong Group, a subsidiary of Wuhan High-tech Group. The previously successfully bred Space Fragrant Rice 2 has been planted on a large scale in this 500 mu base and has achieved this year. At present, with the support of the National Aerospace Breeding Achievement Transformation Center, the company is preparing to establish the Aerospace Breeding High-tech Agricultural Research Institute.

"Space Fragrant Rice 2 has a variety of advantageous traits such as high quality and stable yield, strong rice flavor, etc. The yield per mu is 20%-30% higher than that of the original variety. Its market price is several times higher than that of ordinary rice, which can help farmers increase production and income and has good promotion value." Gao Xuegang said that in the future, the company will also send barley, wheat, soybean and vegetable seeds into space, and breed more high-quality varieties through space breeding technology, so that more farmers can increase production and income. Next year, the company will try to plant space fragrant rice in Yunnan, Guizhou, and Sichuan. After the trial planting is successful, it will carry out large-scale promotion to help high-quality agricultural development.
